A $10.5m supermarket is set to open in the Bay of Plenty this week.
New World The Sands will open in Pāpāmoa on Tuesday and will have about 100 staff, eight-self scan checkouts, six operator checkouts and nearly 150 car parks.
Foodstuffs North Island had spent $10.5m on the store, while the business was owned and operated by Mark Troup Paul, who also worked on New World Newtown redevelopment about five years ago in the Capital.
Bay of Plenty MP Tom Rutherford took a sneak peak at the new supermarket earlier in the year and said in a video to Facebook he was looking forward to getting his “bachelor’s handbag” (roast chicken), buns, coleslaw and mayonnaise at the opening.
“This is going to be a great amenity for our local community,” he said.
Foodstuffs North Island was planning to work on eight new and redeveloped supermarkets and had recently opened four new stores in Havelock North, Huntly, Snells Beach and Mt Albert.
It was expected to open the country’s biggest supermarket, a $100m, 6391 square metre Pak’nSave at Highland Park in East Auckland next year, with a drive-thru for click-and-collect customers.
